At 1:00 in the afternoon, my wife and I stopped into Cupla Coffee at 77 West 200 South in downtown Salt Lake City. It is a modern, comfortable shop with the kind of plush seating that invites you to stay longer than planned. If you need a place to sit with a drink, catch up with someone, or spend a few hours working, Cupla makes a strong first impression.

Cupla was created by identical twins Abigail Purdie and Bethany Heath. The name means “twin” in Irish Gaelic, a fitting choice for two Irish-descended sisters who built the shop around locally roasted coffee, food, and the idea of treating customers like family. The company roasts its coffee at high altitude along the Wasatch Front and has expanded to locations in Salt Lake City, Cottonwood Heights, and Park City.
The downtown location feels bright and current rather than overly precious. Windows along the north wall bring in a generous amount of natural light, and the interior has a relaxed, open feel that is easy to settle into
The comfortable lounge seating makes Cupla a plausible place to spend a few hours with a laptop or a conversation.
The seating is one of the shop’s real strengths. The chairs are plush and comfortable enough for an extended stay, which is not something I can say about every coffee shop chair designed by people apparently opposed to human spines. I did not test the Wi-Fi on this visit, so I cannot vouch for its reliability, but the room itself is well suited to working.
Natural light from the north-facing windows gives the shop a calm, comfortable atmosphere.
Parking is exactly what you would expect downtown: weekday spaces were not difficult to find, but most curbside parking is paid. Prices are about average for the area. Service was straightforward and pleasant.
I ordered a flat white with whole milk, served in a ceramic mug

This was an excellent flat white. The milk-to-espresso ratio was balanced, giving the drink a smooth, rich texture without hiding the coffee. Chocolate notes came through clearly, and the whole milk complemented them nicely. The latte art was expert-level, which is always a welcome indication that someone behind the bar is paying attention.
My flat white rating is 9/10. I would absolutely order it again.
My wife found the visit relaxing, and I agree. Between the natural light, comfortable seating, and a well-made drink, Cupla is an easy place to recommend for coffee.
There was, however, one problem that spoiled the food side of the visit for me. The pastry container was open at the top, and we saw a fly on one of the pastries. I do not understand why coffee shops leave baked goods exposed to flies. It is unpleasant to see, and it removes any interest I have in buying a pastry there.
I would return to Cupla Coffee for the coffee without hesitation, especially for another flat white. But I will not be ordering a pastry at this location unless the display is better protected—perhaps in winter, when the flies are less likely to be part of the selection.
