Dad’s Review

I apologize for the delay since my last post. Several things have been happening. Jackie moved to Los Angeles to pursue her medical career, so she won’t be able to contribute to this installment. However, my other daughter, Sydney, is in town during her summer break from medical school. I’ve invited her to join me so she can contribute to this blog post.

Sydney suggested that we try ‘The HoneySuckle Coffee Co.’ at their downtown location, which is just south of The Ballpark. Parking was easy, yes! As you know, downtown parking costs have gone up, mind you, which has been somewhat of a deterrent for me. Lattes are already overpriced in general! Maybe I’m cheap? I remember not long ago a latte was just $3 and an Americano was $1.99!

My thoughts on The Honeysuckle Coffee Co. I love the atmosphere of this coffee shop. It feels like a happy place! It’s bright with lots of windows, a ceiling of exposed beams except for the counter and barista area, which consists of light-colored wood. The general seating is plentiful and feels inviting and versatile, with a relaxed vibe. I feel very content working on my laptop here. There is also an outdoor patio in front if that’s more your preference.

I ordered a small latte, small as in less milk, which is the trick to ensure proper milk and espresso ratio. Some shops call a small a 16oz cup, which requires an extra shot to even the ratio! The latte art was perfect, couldn’t have been better, which tells me this place has a skilled barista at our convenience.  The flavor was slightly nutty, but smooth, frothy, and lacked any acidity. The bean is provided compliments of Honeysuckle’s partnership with La Barba Roasters.

On top of the latte I ordered a slice of apple coffee cake. This was yummy, but slightly dried out. They might benefit from a more closed display case.

Overall I give this place a rating of 9/10.

Syd’s Review

HoneySuckle Coffee Co. has been around since my high school years. We visited their second location in Salt Lake City, but I first knew it as the little standalone coffee shop in Sandy that was patroned and raved about by my classmates.

I was very pleased by the ambience and vibe of their new location. It’s very homey in here, with plenty of natural lighting, big windows, and just enough plant presence for it to feel zen. We were able to find a comfy cushioned bench in the corner to sit at, but some of the seating in here looks like it might make a butt sore if you camped out here for too long. Because I have the gift of hearing that my father does not, I can add that it wasn’t too loud which was nice for doing work, and the soft music that played over the speakers didn’t feel too distracting. I will say that the A/C was maybe working a little too hard and I could have used some extra clothing layers for this outing.

I ordered a small, iced latte with their signature honeysuckle syrup. This is the kind of place where they serve your iced drink without mixing it so you can get the aesthetic pleasure of seeing the espresso swirl with the milk. However, if there is one thing I share with my dad, it’s a disdain for the coffee to milk ratios in this city. There is nothing worse than ordering an iced latte and then receiving a cold glass of milk with a side of espresso. When I first saw the ratios of espresso to milk in my drink as I retrieved it from the bar, my expectations were low. There definitely could have been less milk or more espresso in my drink, but it wasn’t bad. The honeysuckle syrup was delicious, if not overpowering, which maybe saved the drink altogether. I have no commentary on the espresso taste in my drink due to these circumstances, but I did try dad’s latte, and I liked how nutty and deep the flavor of the bean was.

I give this place a solid 8/10.
