Jackie’s Review
It was as equally early as it was chilly when my dad picked me up this morning to take on our next latte review. That is, to say, it was only slightly early (8am) and only slightly chilly (38F). I suggested we try a spot on the outskirts of central downtown SLC, just kitty corner to the Salt Lake City and County Building, a very distinct landmark of the area. We were off to Sound Brew Coffee, a place I had discovered after visiting their next-door-neighbor, Baby’s Bagels, a few weeks prior. The two establishments are actually connected inside via an arched doorway. (As a quick aside, the bagel I had at this joint changed my worldview on bagels and cream cheese as a whole.)

Walking in, Sound Brew Coffee is most definitely one of the coolest cafes we’ve visited in terms of interior design. Lining the wall on the right are records, both on display and archived into shelves, available for purchase. There are vintage speakers and record places. In terms of seating, there is a main bar with six stools, and three small tables near the back of the cafe seating two each. Today, a projector is perched on one corner of the bar and displaying a soccer game, Liverpool VS Southampton. Rather than music, the speakers boom the sounds of the game and the commentators. The barista himself is in a jersey! My one small, nit-picky comment about this is that the volume was SO loud and a little overwhelming. Atmosphere gets a 9/10!
We ordered our lattes and took our seats. I have been drinking coffee black for the last week, so this latte tasted exquisite to me. What I really liked about the latte here was the light sprinkle of cinnamon added to finish off the milk foam. It added some uniqueness and character to the latte. Otherwise, the ratio of milk to coffee was just slightly high. The espresso itself had a sweet character to it with a pleasant aftertaste. I enjoyed the drink and give it a 7/10. 6/10 on its own, and 1 point for the cinnamon garnish.
I painstakingly walked my dad through my individual reaction to each of my rank list choices for residency, 1-15. It’s an exciting time in my life and my dad encouraged me to try not to sweat it before match day. Later, my friend from high school, David, came to join us as well. This was great because he and my dad spoke at length about computer things, like code and terminal.
All in all, I give this spot a 8/10 for its spiffy interior and sweet, cinnamon-y latte.
See ya next time!
Dad’s Review

Sound Brew Coffee shop is a cool, hip, corner shop downtown Salt Lake City. The antique interior is full of vinyl platters lined up along the North wall. They have a listening area with vintage like speakers with a piano and record players for listening to platters. Since I am deaf, I can’t really comment much on the music side of this place, but it’s clear my daughter adores this place. I really liked the vibe, but I was not keen on the blaring of the soccer game on the wall and ended up tuning it out with my cochlear bluetooth and listening to music on my iPhone.
We both ordered our lattes and I specifically asked for it to be served in a mug. As you know by now, ceramic mugs are ideal for sipping any kind of coffee. The presentation of the latte in its pearly clean white mug was pristine but the latte art was a lot like mine, terrible! Latte art is a tough skill to master! The taste was a little fruity, and was slightly bitter, but the milk and espresso ratio was 2:1 and I could sufficiently taste the espresso. There was also a sprinkle of cinnamon which didn’t blend well with the slight fruity flavor. This sprinkled addition would have been better If the latte were more nutty or chocolaty. Overall my review of this place is about 6/10. I’m sorry if I seem a bit picky lately.
