For me, Athena Beans Coffee in Sandy has become one of those places.

Athena Beans coffee latte art.

Located just off 90th South, Athena Beans Coffee is a little farther south than many of the coffee shops I typically visit. That distance may actually work in its favor. Unlike some of the more popular cafes closer to downtown Salt Lake City, Athena Beans Coffee rarely feels overcrowded. On most Saturday mornings you’re almost guaranteed to find a place to sit, which is becoming increasingly rare in the coffee shop world.

The interior has a warm, traditional coffee house feel. Dark-stained wood dominates the space, giving the cafe a cozy atmosphere, though it can feel a little dim on cloudy days. Like many classic coffee houses, local artwork and paintings adorn the walls, most of which are available for purchase. Athena Beans Coffee actively supports local artists, which adds character to the space and ensures there’s usually something new to look at during each visit.

One feature I particularly appreciate is the layout. The coffee shop is divided into two separate seating areas with the barista counter situated between them. This creates a more relaxed environment than the typical single-room coffee shop where every conversation competes for attention. Whether you’re meeting a friend, reading a book, or getting some work done, there’s usually a corner that fits your mood.

For remote workers and laptop users, Athena Beans Coffee checks most of the important boxes. The wifi has always been stable during my visits, and electrical outlets are conveniently located beneath many of the booths. The tables are slightly taller than I prefer, but the cushioned seating makes up for it. I’ve spent several hours working here without feeling the need to relocate or stretch every fifteen minutes.

Of course, none of that matters if the coffee isn’t good.

Fortunately, Athena Beans Coffee consistently delivers one of the better lattes I’ve had in the Salt Lake Valley.

On my first visit, I ordered a 16-ounce latte in a ceramic mug with an extra shot of espresso. The balance between milk and espresso was nearly perfect. The espresso provided a rich chocolate flavor without introducing much acidity. The result was smooth, full-bodied, and easy to drink. Some coffee shops lean so heavily into bright, acidic espresso that I feel like I’m drinking hot citrus juice. Athena Beans Coffee takes the opposite approach. Their coffee is darker, richer, and far more forgiving on my palate.

On a later visit, I ordered a smaller latte prepared as-is. The experience was remarkably consistent. Again, the milk and espresso were well balanced, producing a smooth drink where neither component dominated the other. Consistency is one of the hardest things for a coffee shop to achieve, and Athena Beans Coffee seems to have it figured out.

The food menu is surprisingly extensive for a neighborhood coffee house. Alongside pastries and breakfast options, they offer avocado toast, breakfast croissants, bagels, sandwiches, smoothies, and several specialty drinks. One item that caught my attention was the ability to build your own sandwich using focaccia or bagels, which makes for a solid lunch option if you’re planning to stay awhile. Their menu was clearly designed for people who intend to spend more than fifteen minutes inside the cafe.

What I appreciate most about Athena Beans Coffee is that it feels unhurried. Many coffee shops today feel like caffeine distribution centers with a few tables scattered around as an afterthought. Athena Beans Coffee was created as a gathering place for conversation, community, coffee, and food, and it shows. The atmosphere encourages people to stay awhile rather than grab a drink and immediately head for the door.

If you’re searching for a coffee shop where you can reliably find a seat, plug in your laptop, enjoy a quality latte, and spend a productive morning, Athena Beans Coffee deserves a spot on your list.

As for the latte?

I’d happily order another one tomorrow.

My rating 9/10.

Dad’s Review Every coffee drinker eventually develops a list of dependable shops.
